Never did I conceive or foresee that I would make a living and provide for my family working as a tour guide. I also never thought work could be something you absolutely love and are eager to do every day. All my life my passion has been nature, traveling, swimming, discovering new beauties, etc; all of this has nurtured my soul and continues to do so. As a young man, prior to starting my university education, I totally rejected the possibility of doing what I love for a living, in my head work was something you do to get the means that allow you to do what you love on your free time (basically the time you are not working).
I studied International Relations. I chose this major due to my hunger for learning from other cultures and countries around the world. The most traditional line of work after this major is Diplomacy or foreign services, I thought I could be comfortable doing something in these areas. Near the end of my studies I interned for the Mexican General Consulate of Shanghai, I was quite excited. The outcome was quite the opposite of my expectations, I totally hated the experience. Having to dress up every day, nicely shaved, ironed shirt; having to deal with the bureaucratic system and being stuck into a desk for 8 hours a day was a living hell for me.
After this experience, I was determined to find a different kind of job. I went from being an English teacher to working in catering, video production, document translation, etc. I was eager not to find a job for a big company or something that would have me in a cubicle for 8 hours a day. At the time I was in real need of a steady income, as the freelance work-life had proven to be very unreliable. One day I saw a job offer as a tour guide for a big company, I really needed the money and I met the requirements so I applied. I really thought I was making a mistake but something deep inside told me to carry on and try it out!
I started my first job as a tour guide: 99 percent of the time I was outdoors, did not have to dress up, and met people from around the world. What was taking place was beyond my imagination, I was really loving my trade. After some years, my path took me to Bushman Photography, I went from a huge tour company into a boutique travel experience agency. It was in this new phase when it hit me! I could be traveling, swimming, discovering new beauties, and sharing this with other human beings! All this would be part of my job!
With Bushman we went much deeper, I was becoming part of a family devoted to promoting conservation, social programs, low impact, regenerative tourism, and many other values I am now in love with. Finally, I saw myself in a place I was passionate about, it felt like becoming the CEO of a big company but with no crazy stress. Looking back, I feel so fortunate to have made such a beautiful mistake and tried out the possibility of becoming a tour guide.
